A cider a day keeps the doctor away!

Cider One of England’s oldest alcoholic drinks has long been known to have many medicinal qualities, it was bought on board by Captain Cook for the treatment of scurvy. In the early 19th century, cider was even advertised as a treatment for gout. But there hasn’t been any proof!

Scientists have confirmed there are high levels of health-enhancing antioxidants in cider, Antioxidants ‘mop up’ substances called free radicals, naturally produced in the body but linked to damaged cells.

Dr Caroline Walker, a scientist at Brewing Research International in Surrey, said: ‘A diet rich in antioxidants may help to protect against disease, and our research confirms cider has the same levels of antioxidants as red wine.’

Half a pint of good quality cider, delivers the same amount of antioxidants as a glass of red wine, Both now recognised as having health benefits, that help protect against cancer, heart disease and other age related conditions.

It’s gluten free quality also prevents benefits, allowing even celiacs to enjoy a glass.

John Thatcher, from Sandford, Somerset, ex-chairman of the National Association of Cider Makers, said: ‘I have spent a lifetime making cider, enjoying a regular glass or two, and now I can enjoy it all the more knowing it is helping to keep me healthy.’
