THE CIDER WORLD ACCORDING TO MATILDA TEMPERLEY OF BURROW HILL

THE CIDER WORLD ACCORDING TO MATILDA TEMPERLEY OF BURROW HILL

WHERE ARE YOU BASED? WHY HERE?

South Somerset

DESCRIBE YOUR CIDER CO IN 3 WORDS...

innovative, traditional, inspiring

WHAT MAKES YOUR CIDERS STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD?

At Burrow Hill we have championed the diversification of the cider industry making only 100% pure juice ciders on our farm. We have been making single variety bottle fermented cider for over 30 years and ice for cider for around twenty years. We also have the first commercial cider distilling license in the UK and are the only cider makers making Somerset Cider Brandy.

WHAT IS THE KEY TO PRODUCING GOOD CIDER/PERRY?

100% pure juice from 100% cider apples grown on standard orchards with no pesticides or nitrogen. Let the apples do the talking.

WHAT ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS A CIDER-MAKER?

The polarisation in the industry with the big commercial companies producing alcopop ciders from concentrate and therefore destroying the UK's cider orchard traditions.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The rules about what cider is should be changed. Cider should be pure juice from apples and if not should be labelled differently.

FAVOURITE APPLE/PEAR VARIETY? WHY?

Stoke Red, because it is a difficult apple that is completely biennial but produced an incredible single variety cider that is worth waiting for.

HOW IMPORTANT IS CIDER EDUCATION FOR CONSUMERS FOR PRODUCERS LIKE YOURSELVES?

It is very important that people know what they are drinking and where it comes from.

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR?

We are looking forward to planting a new orchard with specialist varieties.

'THE CRAFT CIDER REVOLUTION IS COMING BECAUSE...

There are so many new and exciting young cider makers full of passion

DO YOU HAVE ANY EVENTS PLANNED THAT PEOPLE CAN COME ALONG TO AND BE PART OF?

We have Cider Bus Saturdays until October.

Whats it like being a women in the Cider industry? And do you think more could be done to encourage more women in?

It is wonderful being a woman in the industry and it has become easier over the years. The cider industry is quite supportive and I hope there are many more women coming through.
